Rhodiola rosea, Crassulaceae

rose orpin, golden root, roseroot

A hardy perennial (up to zone 1!) whose succulent leaves and young spring shoots can be eaten raw or cooked, or fermented. It's also a marginal medicinal plant believed to increase our resistance to stress, and has been used in traditional medicine for over 3,000 years. This adaptogenic power is found above all in the dried root, which smells of roses. Flowers (yellow) from May to August. Dioecious plant = either male or female. 25 cm high.

Double bag, due to low germination rate. 200 seeds

Sprinkle these tiny seeds on the surface of a coarse sand-based potting soil (light is needed to germinate) and cold stratify (between -4°C and 4°C) for 6-8 weeks. Then maintain at around 10°C, ideally with the natural fluctuation of temperatures in spring. Germination usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks. Rhodiola prefers full sun at high altitudes and part shade at lower altitudes, and likes fairly fertile limestone soils. You can also grow this plant in pots, potting it successively in larger and larger pots... You can use it as ground cover, planting it every 30cm in all directions.
