Chaenomeles japonica, Rosaceae
The Japanese quince, a hardy fruit bush with three major assets:
- Its ornamental spring flowers are a beautiful vibrant red.
- Its highly aromatic fruits (a single picked fruit perfumes an entire room), which make it possible to prepare our quince jelly or quince paste where the quince tree wouldn't survive.
- Its great tolerance of imperfect growing conditions. It grows here in very compact clay where few fruit trees would survive. Zone 4.
1.5 g = 30-35 seeds

Japanese quince seeds are prone to dormancy, and the following protocol will help them to germinate: Soak them for 24 hours in lukewarm water. Then place them in a seedbed in the fridge (in a ziploc or small box) for 6 weeks, checking from time to time to remove any that begin to germinate. Then sow the stratified seeds in a deep pot, or directly in the garden in a nursery, where the seeds will benefit from cool temperatures to establish themselves. Do not expose these seedlings to excessively warm temperatures!
