organic Algerian sweet

Fedia cornucopiae, syn. F. graciliflora, Caprifoliaceae

Algerian valerian, cornucopia, Algerian salad, fedia

The Algerian sweet is a pretty annual plant that grows spontaneously in olive groves around the Mediterranean basin. It's very decorative when you let its little pink flowers bloom, and it's a real treat for the bees!

But it's not just beautiful, it's good too: in salads, where its fleshy green leaves, larger than those of its close relative lamb's lettuce, add a nutty flavor. Unlike lamb's lettuce, which needs to be grown in the cool of autumn, it enjoys the warmth of summer. Excellent post-harvest shelf life. 60 days to maturity from direct sowing.

Sow directly in the garden, spring or summer. Sow lightly 1/2 cm deep, 30 cm between rows. Thin out every 10-15 cm along the row. Germination is sometimes irregular and can take up to 28 days at 20°C.
It's easy to stretch out its cultivation in autumn by giving it the protection of an unheated tunnel. It can be resown and spread throughout the garden, much like borage.
