Hyoscyamus niger, Solanaceae
Teigneux herb, Henbane
Venerable and fearsome black henbane. All its parts are poisonous, but the most toxic is its magnificent, hairy leaves, which cause hallucinations and delirium accompanied by convulsions. It's a deadly poison to be feared. Its pale yellow flowers with purple veins look out from all directions, all summer long in the second year. It attracts beetles, which even abandon our eggplants for it.
Seed life: over a hundred years according to Marie-Victorin, but germination is erratic. At the beginning of the last century, this plant was still used to make lotions against lice and ringworm. Hardy biennial.

Difficult germination: File seeds a little if possible, or incise with a scalpel, then soak in hot water for 24 hours (change water 3-4 times). Sow and chill (+4°C -4°C) for 4 to 6 weeks, either in the fridge or, even better, outdoors in autumn. The seedlings will then benefit from oscillating spring temperatures.
