organic Virginia speedwell

Veronicastrum virginicum, Scrophulariaceae

syn. Leptendra virginica

veronicastre, Culver's root

If you're looking for a hardy plant to add structure to your perennial beds or flower meadow, the almost foolproof Virginia speedwell is for you. It will always be there, despite your neglect, brightly punctuating the garden horizon with its vertical accents. Its small white flowers form long, skyward-pointing spikes with subtle, elegant undulations, contrasting particularly well with the echinaceas, asters and anemones also in bloom at the end of summer. Hardy up to zone 3. For full sun or partial shade in soil that's not too dry. 1.4 to 1.8 m high.

Press the tiny seeds onto the surface of a seedbed and keep moist, at around 20°C. Germination is concentrated in the first two weeks and continues a little later. Raise the seedlings in containers and, once acclimatized to outdoor conditions, transplant them to the garden, aiming for a final spacing of between 30 and 60 cm.
