Arikara organic sunflower
$ 4,50
Helianthus annuus, Asteraceae
The 'Arikara' sunflower is a variety from the Sahnish tradition (also called Arikara), a tribe of farmers native to the Dakotas. These large sunflowers bend their yellow-petaled flowers towards us at 3 m high, sometimes single and very large, sometimes numerous and smaller... eventually forming huge white, black or streaked seed heads.

The tradition is to plant these seeds early in the spring, when the temperature is around 10°C... A few seeds are sown together every 60 cm, about 2 cm deep, and a single sturdy plant is kept in each planting. The seeds are ready to harvest at the very end of the season in autumn.
