organic Balbis nightshade

$ 4,50

Solanum sisymbriifolium, Solanaceae

Tomate-épine, tomate-litchi, vila-vila, sticky nightshade, litchi tomato

Balbis nightshade is often considered a purely ornamental plant and, as such, never fails to attract attention; but its fruits are more than worth the risk of abrasion associated with harvesting them. One wonders against whom this curious beauty is protecting itself with such an array of orange thorns covering its entire body. Gloves and pruning shears are needed to pick the clusters of bright red, cherry-sized fruit, sweet and slightly acidic, reminiscent of lychee. It grows to a height of 1.20 m, with large white or lilac flowers similar to those of the eggplant. Its stems are hairy (under the spines). An annual that can be grown like a tomato, without pruning.
