Utrecht Blue organic wheat

$ 5,00

Triticum dicoccum var. stratum, Poaceae

amidonnier, farro, emmer

Utrecht Blue wheat is actually a variety of starch wheat, or "emmer", known as "farro medio" in Italy. Along with einkorn, or small spelt, known as "farro piccolo", it is one of the oldest cultivated cereals, less rich in gluten but richer in protein and trace elements than modern wheat. But, alas, Its grain is difficult to thresh and will therefore only be consumed by the most passionate lovers of old grains.

This "wheat" is mainly used for its ornamental qualities, and for good reason! It's so beautiful, with its long black beards dancing in the wind! Its blue-gray grains are arranged in four rows on long stalks that look great in bouquets, or braided... Height: 1.50 m.

Sow early in the spring for harvesting in September. Grasses are sensitive to day length, and will start to bolt from the summer solstice, so we want them to have time to build up good reserves before bolting. We don't suggest broadcast sowing, but rather rows about 20 cm apart, aiming for 7 to 15 cm between plants on the row. Sowing depth: approx. 2 cm.
