Monarda fistulosa, Lamiaceae
bergamote sauvage, false bergamot, wild bergamot
Monarde fistuleuse is a perennial plant native to North America, whose nectar-filled pink leaves and flowers are imbued with a powerful peppery, minty and citric aroma, hence the name wild bergamot. It likes soil that drains well but retains a certain freshness, and tolerates drought well, better than Monarda didyma. It is also less susceptible to mildew than Monarda didyma and has a stronger aroma. Its volatile compounds are similar to those of Greek oregano... Find out more about its many properties (antibacterial, antifungal, immunostimulant...) A little shade is good for it if the soil is drier. Hardy up to zone 3. 1 m tall.
