The Japanese quince, a hardy fruit bush with three major assets:

  1. Its ornamental spring flowers are a beautiful vibrant red. 
  2. Its highly aromatic fruits (a single picked fruit perfumes an entire room), which make it possible to prepare our quince jelly or quince paste where the quince tree wouldn't survive. 
  3. Its great tolerance of imperfect growing conditions. It grows here in very compact clay where few fruit trees would survive. Zone 4.

Japanese quince seeds are prone to dormancy, and the following protocol will help them to germinate: Soak them for 24 hours in lukewarm water. Then place them in a seedbed in the fridge (in a ziploc or small box) for 6 weeks, checking from time to time to remove any that begin to germinate. Then sow the stratified seeds in a deep pot, or directly in the garden in a nursery, where the seeds will benefit from cool temperatures to establish themselves. Do not expose these seedlings to excessively warm temperatures!
