Nicandra physalodes, Solanaceae

shoo fly plant, apple-of-Peru

Nicandra is an imposing annual plant with tubular, purplish-blue flowers with white throats, each lasting one day from midsummer to frost. These are followed by paper lantern fruiting bodies, strongly tinged with indigo, as are the stems. It is often placed in greenhouses, where it is thought to repel whiteflies. It performs best in soil well enriched with compost. As wide as it is tall, from 1.2 to 2 m.
