Citrullus lanatus, Cucurbits
watermelon
Watermelon 'Cekirdegi Oyali', originally from Turkey, was popularized by Dr. Mehmet Öztan and Amy Thompson of Two Seeds in a Pod, a seed company specializing in seeds of Turkish origin. The fruit is red-fleshed, sweet and juicy. The plants are quite productive, with fruit generally reaching 4 kg. What's more, the most fascinating aspect of this plant comes from its seeds, whose natural seed coat patterns are reminiscent of plant foliage, animal paw prints or even Paleolithic proto-writing. In fact, according to our research, its name means "lace seed", in reference to the engraved appearance of the seeds. Approximately 100 days to maturity, or 85 days when transplanted from an indoor seedbed.
