Papaver somniferum, Papaveraceae
Pastry poppy
The 'Ziar' poppy is an annual plant. An opium poppy cultivar for cooking, selected for its seeds, which are sweeter than those of the species, and its very large salt shakers, which remain closed even when ripe, preventing the seeds from escaping. Single pale lavender petals with dark pink centers. Less of a soporific than other poppies, such as the peony flower and the Turkish poppyIdeal for vinaigrettes and cakes. Will reseed, but less than other poppies thanks to its closed capsule. 90 cm.
bag = approx. 400 seeds
2 g = about 1600 seeds
Seeds certified organic by Québec Vraiproduced here at LA SOCIÉTÉ DES PLANTES
Direct sowing in May, without burying seeds too deeply; thin out every 15 cm. Germination: 10-21 days at 15°C-18°C. Seeds are easy to harvest, as the "salt shaker" remains closed (which also helps control spontaneous sowing).
