Betonica officinalis, Lamiaceae

épiaire officiinale, betoony, bishop's wort, formerly Stachys officinalis

Betony is a hardy perennial that thrives in slightly damp corners of gardens... Its spikes of purplish flowers rise from small tufts of lush leaves to around 60 cm high and, in small colonies, can act as ground cover between taller perennials. Infusion of the leaves tastes great and has a host of desirable effects: as a painkiller, or to help combat digestive headaches, for example.

Barely cover the seeds, press them into the potting soil and keep them moist until germination, which should take place irregularly over a few weeks. Cool, fluctuating temperatures of between 5°C and 18°C are ideal for germination. Aim for 60 cm spacing in the garden.
