Phacelia tanacetifolia, Boraginaceae(Hydrophyllaceae)

One of the problems with phacelia is that it attracts so many pollinators that they may shun other flowers in the garden... you'll hear the "buzz" of insects at work on these fragrant periwinkle-blue flowers with their long, protruding stamens. It's not only beautiful, it's also very useful, as it's a remarkable melliferous plant. It can also be used as an aid to pest control: among other things, it attracts aphid-predatory syrphid flies. And it's an excellent green manure for small areas, where it provides good suppression of weed growth while improving soil structure.

Phacelia seed germinates best in cool soil (13°C-18°C), buried deep enough not to see light (at least 5 mm deep). It prefers aerated soils, and is less fond of heavy, waterlogged soils. Aim for a final spacing of 30 cm between plants.
