organic garlic

Allium obliquum, Liliaceae

ail vrillé, oblique garlic, twistedleaf garlic

The luminous yellow-green flowers of spiral garlic radiate like stars at the end of their sturdy, long, bluish stems. At 60-90 cm tall, this perennial garlic can occupy all sorts of places in the garden, since the height of its stems enables it to climb up through several species of perennials, such as peonies, for example.

We eat the flat leaves, which are helicoidal, as the name suggests. But the bulbs can also be eaten and are chemically similar to cultivated garlic, though much smaller.

This plant of Eurasian origin prefers soil with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH, rather dry in summer, in sun or semi-shade. Tolerates heavy clay. Hardy in zone 3.

Sow between 10°C and 20°C, with the seeds pressed into the first mm of potting soil. You'll get a better germination rate if you leave the seedlings for 2 to 3 weeks at this temperature (10°C-20°C), then put them in a cold place (-4°C to +4°C) for around 4 weeks, before returning them to room temperature for further germination.
