organic chard

Dipsacus sylvestris, Caprifoliaceae

Cabaret des oiseaux, lavoir de Vénus, cardère commune, teasel

Carder was once used to card wool. The first year, its rosettes of long leaves make good ground cover. The following year, the flowering stem rises, a steep, highly architectural candelabrum. The leaves, linked in pairs at the stem, form a bowl where birds come to drink. It also attracts bees and butterflies. The progression of flower bloom is unique, starting with a pinkish ring in the center of the spike, then another on either side each day, progressing upwards and downwards simultaneously. An excellent dried flower. Monocarpic perennial, hardy in zone 3, and self-sowing: potentially invasive! 1.50m-2m.

Seeds certified organic by Québec Vraiproduced here at LA SOCIÉTÉ DES PLANTES

Sow directly in spring, seeds lightly covered. Leave at least 35 cm between plants. Keep a close eye on your population! This plant will tend to reseed itself perhaps more than you'd like...
