Angelica archangelica, Apiaceae

root of the Holy Spirit

Angelica is a very hardy aromatic plant, a robust and imposing beauty - up to 2 m tall - in its flowering year. Its hollow stems are traditionally candied in sugar. Its flavor, announced by a penetrating, warm, musky scent, is a welcome change from the excess acidity of certain fruits. The whole plant is used: seeds, flowers, leaves, stems and roots, which are the most sought-after for their medicinal properties. Its stimulating effect titillates us joyfully: it's a drug! On top of all that, it acts as a powerful inhibitor of tomato alternariosis, and probably of several other fungal diseases... Bisanual or perennial for a few years if prevented from flowering.

Sow on the surface (light is needed for germination) and keep the surface moist. Germination takes 4 weeks at 15°C to 20°C.

Ideally, angelica should be sown in August-September from fresh summer seed. We keep seeds refrigerated all year round to preserve as much of their germinative power as possible... so it's possible to sow these seeds in winter and the following spring, but not the following year.

Soak seeds in water before sowing for 6 hours at 10°C before exposing them to room temperature. Alternatively, they can be pre-treated at 5°C for 6 weeks in damp sand.
