organic milkweed

$ 4,50

Asclepias tuberosa, Apocynaceae

Tuberous milkweed is more suitable for the garden than common milkweed. This charming native species, with its bright orange umbels of flowers, can hold its own in flowerbeds and doesn't take over the whole plot, unlike its cousin... although it does need a space in full sun. It doesn't need rich, humus-rich soil; it tolerates drought and a little misery. It's a flamboyant presence in the garden in summer, and a magnificent cut flower! (Beware of stem sap, which can cause skin irritation). Hardy up to zone 3. 40 to 60 cm high.

These milkweed seeds need to undergo cold stratification:

Place the seeds in contact with moist potting soil, and give them a cold period of at least 4 weeks, between -4°C and +4°C. Then expose them to heat, at around 20°C. Germination will then take place within 3 weeks... You can also sow directly in the garden in autumn, for germination the following spring. When you do the final transplanting, leave 40 to 60 cm between plants in the garden.
