Artemisia annua, Asteraceae

Sweet Annie

Annual mugwort is very discreet at the start of the season, but eventually forms lacy cones of leaves that look like small conifers from a distance. We make woven crowns of it to perfume wardrobes, where it repels moths... frankly, it's nicer than mothballs. It's also the source of artemisin, used in alternative treatments for malaria and cancer, among others. Sow it and let it reseed wherever you go, as you'll never tire of its sweet fragrance. Makes attractive hedges that can deter insect pests. 30 cm-1.5m.

La Maison de l'Artemisia is a French humanitarian association dedicated to the fight against malaria: https://maison-artemisia.org
