Hablitzia tamnoides, Amaranthaceae

spinach vine

In its native region, Caucasian climbing spinach is an elegant herbaceous perennial that grows in spruce and beech forests. It climbs to heights of 2-3 m in the light filtered by these trees. The young shoots are eaten raw in salads, while the older leaves are cooked like spinach. The elongated, heart-shaped leaves are beautiful enough for the plant to have been introduced as an ornamental climber in Scandinavia in the 19th century. Hardy in zone 3.
