Cosmos bipinnatus, Asteraceae

Cosmos Rubenza is prized for its large, deep ruby-red flowers, which take on an old-pink hue as they fade. It's a cut flower that holds well in a vase, and blooms early. Around 80 cm high, it can be grown in containers as well as in flowerbeds.

Sow in situ after any danger of frost when the soil reaches a minimum of 16 ˚C, ideally between 20 ˚C and 25 ˚C, and aim for 25-30 cm plant spacing. Alternatively, start seedlings indoors 4-5 weeks before transplanting after the last expected frost. Grow in full sun, whatever the soil, preferably even a little poor. Cosmos don't like wind very much... You can pinch back the main stem when the plant reaches 30 cm to stimulate a bushier growth habit.
