Ping Tung Long eggplant - organic
$ 4,50
Solanum melongena, Solanaceae
Ping Tung Long is a long, slender eggplant native to Taiwan. Tender and sweet, it is perfect for stir-fries and grilling. It is very prolific, hardy for an eggplant, and disease-resistant. Its delicately curved violet fruits are combed with white and measure around 5 cm x 30 cm. The plants are around 45 cm tall and stand upright, protecting the fruit with their beautiful, velvety, purple-veined leaves. The dazzling lavender flowers are crinkled like taffeta. About 70 days to maturity.
Note: Here in Kamouraska, we have to grow most eggplant varieties under cover in a tunnel. Even though this is an early variety of eggplant, this Asian species thrives on heat that doesn't occur naturally in our region.

Sow 8 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Eggplant seeds germinate best at 24 °C to 32 °C, after being rinsed/soaked in very hot water. When germination stagnates, lower the temperature to 20 °C, which will stimulate the remaining seeds to germinate. Transplant when the first true leaves appear and keep at 20 °C until transplanting to the garden. You can lower the temperature to 16 °C a week before transplanting to harden them off. Final spacing: 45-60 cm.
