Laportea canadensis, Urticaceae

Canada nettle, wood nettle

The Canadian laportéa doesn't grow much taller than 1 m 20, unlike its tree-like cousins of the Laportea genus that grow in the tropics. It thrives under the canopy of trees (the maple is its favorite tree in the wild) and will be at ease in a shady corner of your garden, or in the sun if the soil retains moisture well. It's a hardy perennial in zone 3 that spreads by rhizomes as well as by seed... so you'll need to find the right space for it to form its little colony.

Unlike thestinging nettleIt is monoecious, so both sexes can be found on the same plant: female flowers at the top, and males lower down under the leaves, all growing horizontally from the stem, giving a graphic rigor that is very pleasing to the eye. Its leaves are mainly alternate, oval and broad, with long petioles. As thestinging nettleWith the exception of the first spring harvests, when the plant is still smooth, you need to protect yourself if you want to interact with it. Many people consider it the best nettle to eat. It is eaten mainly as whole young spring shoots, like asparagus, or as terminal shoots in summer.

Sow seeds on the surface of potting soil and keep at between 15°C and 18°C, ideally alternating between the 2 temperatures. Emergence takes 3 weeks. When the seedlings are a few cm high, put on gloves and transplant them into individual pots to develop their root mass before final transplanting to the garden at 60-90 cm intervals. This nettle likes fertile, moist soil with some shade.
