Orlaya grandiflora, Apiaceae

Caucalis à grandes fleurs, white finch laceflower

Large-flowered orlaya is a hardy annual that will blend freshly and elegantly with the other flowers in your garden, or in your bouquets... Because it makes an excellent cut flower as well as being easy to grow. Its strong branching stems bear a show of delicate white flowers in umbels, crowned by a ring of larger petals, as is the case with certain hydrangeas... all dressed in luxuriant, finely cut foliage.

This wild beauty grows naturally in dry, stony soil, where it will reach a height of around 60 cm... In richer cultivated soil, it will reach 90 cm. Summer flowering in Quebec, starting 10-12 weeks after sowing and lasting until the frosts if you top it. For bouquets, cut flower stems when they are at least half or fully open. Thorny fruiting is also interesting, if you let the flowers set seed.

Sow the seeds directly in the garden in spring, while it's still cool, in a sunny spot, in soil that drains well. If you need to sow indoors, chill the seeds in the fridge for 1-2 weeks and then store your seedlings at between 15°C and 18°C for the germination period, which will last between 12 and 20 days. Leave a final spacing of 22-30 cm between seedlings.
