Cirsium oleraceum

cirse faux-épinard, cabbage thistle, siberian thistle, devil's rib

Market thistle is an imposing thornless perennial thistle that grows naturally in moist soils in its native Eurasia. Its creamy-white, purple-tinged flowers bloom from July to September and, although discreet, are a great attraction for pollinators and butterflies. This plant also offers us the opportunity to eat its young stems and leaves, as well as its root, and is grown for these reasons in India and Japan. 150 cm.

Soak them in water for 4 h, then press the seeds onto the surface of the potting soil (they need light to germinate) and keep well moistened. Cold stratify (-4°C to +4°C) for 6 weeks, then leave at 20°C-22°C until germination, which will take more than 15 days. Transplant to soil that's not too acid, in partial shade or full sun if it's moist enough.
