Jaspée de Vendée Melonnette squash

$ 4,50

Cucurbita pepo, Cucurbitaceae

Melonnette Jaspée de Vendée' is an ancient variety of pumpkin from the Vendée region of France. It's beautiful, delicious and well adapted to Quebec.

It is a prolific runner, producing 5 to 7 fruits per plant. The ball-shaped fruits are white at first, and can be used like zucchinis at this stage. They turn golden yellow when ripe, with an embroidered skin like small melons, and are then delectable, after 2-3 months' storage. Size varies between 15 and 20 cm in diameter, weighing between 1 and 3 kg. They can be kept dry until March and even April, at their best in January and February.

The orange flesh of the Melonnette is rich and very sweet, excellent even raw, grated and served with a vinaigrette. It can also be used to make soups, purées, custards, fritters, tarts, cakes and even jam. Slices dried for a few hours in a dehydrator (which concentrates the fruity flavour and gives flexibility) are a real delight simply put under the grill!

It takes about 90 days after direct sowing to harvest fully ripe fruit.
