Monarda didyma, Lamiaceae

Scarlet monarda is visually stunning, can be used in cooking, and is a delight for butterflies and hummingbirds: an exceptional aromatic plant for Nordic gardens!

The aroma of the whole plant is reminiscent of bergamot fruit, but perhaps even more so of fresh thyme, and the plant contains a good dose of thymol, which gives it its antiseptic properties. Use young monarde leaves in green salads or fruit salads. Dried, they can be drunk as herbal tea... Fresh petals tossed in butter work wonders!

In the garden, scarlet monarda does not tolerate situations as dry as its cousin the fistulous monardIt thrives in a semi-shaded location, receiving morning sun and light soil that retains its moisture. It is magnificent when well grown. To give the best possible show, remember to divide it in spring every 3-4 years or so, as it tends to die from the center... If you wish to grow monarda in a pot, place it in a semi-shaded spot and don't let the soil dry out. 90 cm. Zone 3.
