organic Hungarian echinops

Echinops bannaticus, Asteraceae
azure ball, Hungarian sea urchin
Hungarian echinops is a very hardy, undemanding perennial. Its metallic blue ball-shaped flowers are spectacular and highly prized in cut flower bouquets, as well as for attracting pollinators and butterflies to the garden. Azure balls are tolerant of neglect and drought, as long as they are in the sun and the soil is rich enough, as they are true nitrophiles (= nitrogen lovers). They are equally at home in wild landscapes or manicured flowerbeds. 90-120 cm. Zone 3.

Press echinops seeds onto the surface of potting soil, or very shallowly, as seeds need to see light to germinate. Store seedlings at around 20°C. Germination will take place over a period of 2 to 5 weeks... Transplant the seedlings into 8 cm pots, 50 cm apart, where they will live until transplanted to the garden.
