Ratibida columnifera, Asteraceae
mexican hat, sombrero, longhead coneflower
Mexican hat is a native perennial whose native range extends from the west coast of North America to Manitoba. Its remarkable blooms can be admired from June to September in prairies and dry valleys. A well-anchored taproot supports these strange bouquets of yellow flowers with downward-combed petals, clearly related to echinaceas and rudbeckies... except that here the central cone is filiform and very protuberant, creating a profile that is, to say the least, comical. 40-90 cm high. For a warm, dry or moderately dry site in full sun.

Press the seeds onto the surface of a potting soil and keep moist, at around 21°C. Germination is concentrated in the first two weeks. Raise seedlings in containers and, once acclimatized to outdoor conditions, transplant them to the garden, aiming for a final spacing of between 30 and 60 cm.
Many sources claim that seeds of this species must be cold-stratified to bring them out of dormancy, but this is not the case for us... Germination occurs quickly and unequivocally at 21°C with no preceding cold spells.
