Tetragonolobus purpureus (syn. Lotus tetragonolobus), Fabaceae

cultivated potter, asparagus pea, winged pea

Asparagus peas are a type of creeping pea with beautiful crimson-red flowers followed by winged pods that are delicious young, at less than 3 cm long. Steaming enhances their distinctive flavor, reminiscent of asparagus and peas. They can be harvested over 10 weeks. The flowering terminal shoots add an unusual color to salads. This wild plant has been cultivated since at least the 16th century. Its cultivation is undemanding. Once established, it is drought-resistant.
