Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum, Allioideae

Bred at Ferme Val-aux-Vents since 1999, this is an autumn leek with medium-green foliage sometimes tinged with bluish bloom.  Non-bulbous stem, 20-25 cm X 3-4 cm. Very fine-grained flesh. Growth is timid at first, but leads to a 250-300 g size once trimmed, at the end of September. Harvested at Thanksgiving in the Rimouski region. Excellent in mini format (planted in bunches of 4 every 10 cm, or full format planted singly every 10 cm. Can be overwintered for a spring leek crop (June 10-20 in Rimouski). The aerial part appears destroyed at thaw, but reconstitutes itself at 150 % in the following 5-6 weeks. An early treat!
