Caragana arborescens, Fabaceae

caragana, Siberian peashrub

Siberian pea, or caragana, is a very hardy, wind-resistant shrub with a rapid, vase-shaped growth habit. It prefers full sun and soil that doesn't retain too much water. Its yellow flowers are followed by small pea pods, a protein-rich food source to be considered for poultry or even human beasts... About the size of lentils, these 'peas' can be used after soaking like any other legume. An ideal candidate for protecting light soil from erosion and, as an added bonus, for fixing nitrogen. Up to 5 m x 2 m. Zone 2.

Pre-treatment: Soak seeds for 24 to 48 hours in lukewarm water, until they swell (repeat if necessary). They can also be lightly scarified with sandpaper. Then press them onto the surface of the potting soil (they need light to germinate); germination will begin unevenly. Keep moist, between 21°C and 23°C.

Alternative: place in cold storage (-4°C to +4°C) for 3 weeks before exposing to heat... this way, you can get a higher germination %.
