stinging nettle

We're most familiar with the stinging hairs that cover the plant's stems and leaves, providing a stinging sensation to anyone who brushes against them... but stinging nettle is so much more!

Whether you eat it, drink it, whip yourself with it, or make a purin for the garden... it's there for us, abundant, generous, ready to share its benefits and its typical earthy, green flavor, a little spicier than spinach. Because for us, it's basically a vegetable! Delicious greens that lose their spiciness when cooked, and are particularly good in soup, or as part of an risottoin malfatti or raviolior in pesto... An entire chapter could be written on all its uses for the body, with marked action on the skin and hair, or its contribution to the world of textiles, either as a dye or as a fiber, as its stem is also spun. Of particular note is its silicic acid, vitamin A and C, and iron content... We invite you to refer to professional herbalists for its therapeutic use. Hardy perennial up to zone 3, propagating both by underground rhizomes and by spontaneous sowing. To be judiciously placed in the garden, where its tendency to spread and its stinging power will not harm it.

Sow seeds on the surface of potting soil and place in a cold environment (between -4°C and +4°C) for 6 weeks... Then store between 15°C and 20°C, ideally alternating between the 2 temperatures. Emergence takes 3 weeks. When the seedlings are 7 cm tall, put on gloves and transplant them into individual pots to develop their root mass before final transplanting to the garden. Nettles thrive in fertile, moist soil with some shade.
