Thymus serpyllum, Lamiaceae

mother of thyme

Thyme serpolet is a ground cover with a remarkable bloom in variations of mauve. It's a joyful alternative to lawns, especially in dry soils, where it will tolerate drought perfectly once well established. It can be trampled without exaggeration, giving off an invigorating fragrance. Among its many properties, thyme clears the respiratory tract... Botanist Linnaeus also claimed it was excellent for hangovers. Bonus: bees love its pollen. From 3 to 10 cm high. Zone 4.

We recommend sowing indoors (mid-March to mid-June) rather than broadcasting, in the case of these tiny seeds. Sow the seeds by pressing them gently onto the surface of the soil, without covering them, and keep moist until germination, which can take from 14 to 28 days. Ideal germination temperature: between 12°C and 18°C. Transplant into individual containers when seedlings have 4 true leaves. Transplant small plants that have developed a good root system to the garden, leaving 15-30 cm in all directions between plants.
