Solanum burbankii, Solanaceae

bleuet des jardins, sunberry

The wonderberry: The controversial invention of Luther Burbank, the botanist-horticulturist-hybridizer who developed over 800 plant lines and varieties during his long career spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

It's an annual vegetable plant that grows fast in any soil and yields a profusion of blueberry-like fruits, blue-black and dull, that make good pies and jams. Their flavor isn't all that pronounced, but it's sweet and pleasant, blending well with the taste of other fruits while adding a rich purple hue. We recommend eating only ripe fruit, raw or cooked. Easy to grow. Occasional reseeding. Early. 50 cm.
